Collection: IHUNAYA KIGALI

Our IHUNAYA KIGALI collection brings you a range of handwoven products from across Rwanda. 

For centuries, Rwandese women have passed the intricate art of weaving baskets from mother to daughter. The special act signified a girl’s transition into womanhood. After the genocide of 1994, basket weaving had a new purpose. It also became a bonding exercise, a way for women to rebuild the relationships in their communities. 

Rwandese baskets are made by processing the sisal plant into sisal fibers, dyeing the fibers, and weaving the fiber over sweetgrass.

The IHUNAYA KIGALI collection was made by cooperatives of Rwandese women in a bid to grow their communities by offering vibrant pieces of their age-old culture.
